DIRECTORS STATEMENT

Filming this documentary about his father made Ryan realized the pumpkin doesn't stray far from the vine. It turns out Ryan's father approaches gardening much like Ryan approaches filmmaking. They are both obsessive and meticulous about every technical detail and they pride themselves on good planning, innovation and experimentation.
And in the end, they receive joy not just from the final product but from the process and the educational experience as well.

Complimenting Ryan the engineer, is Bill (not the grower, a different Bill) the architect and, like an architect, bill looks at filmmaking as a combination of art and science. When Ryan would get bogged down by a small detail Bill would try to bring back the larger picture, and when Bill would present a broad idea or concept Ryan would present the now-how to get it done.

This was Ryan and Bill's first documentary and it presented many challenges to overcome. One challenge was the vast the amount of information that had to be sifted through in order to create a comprehensive and compelling story. Whether it was organizing the over 600,000 time lapse images from 4 separate cameras or logging the
over 90 hours of raw footage, the shear amount of data was sometimes overwhelming. But Ryan, approaching it as engineer and Bill, approaching it as an architect, slowly picked apart and pealed away layer after until a story emerged. And while this documentary took more time and effort than either of them expected, both would love to
do it again..
